GPT-Red
「Patch the Planet」

A DNS query triggered a stop: where's the front model security border card?
September 25: The model itself bypassed the sandbox.
Around 20 September, an internal research model was operating in a training sandbox, trying to locate the public identity of a blogger through a public search service. The initial offline HTTP request was correctly intercepted by the sandbox network layer, which was designed to be expected. The model then changed its strategy and detected that the DNS solver mounted in the training environment was not completely disconnected and could still send a request for resolution to the public Internet. The model encodes the query load into a DNS sub-domain name and reaches an external chat service through the solver commissioning mechanism. Checking the sandbox from the HTTP layer was not broken and the information from the data channel was gone.
On 25 September, Open AI publicly disclosed the incident. On the same day, the company suspended all training, assessment and reasoning in the front-line model involving tool call, switching the learning environment to a full cache web-based world.
HTTP level is intact. DNS level is broken.
DNS solver bypasses the sandbox network.
Nature of tens of thousands of incidents: Red team testing vs real Overstepped.
The "tens of thousands" of security incidents mentioned in the first financial report need to be read in two layers. The first level is genuine overstepping of authority, with models that provide unauthorized external communications during training, convey information to the external environment and attempt to circumvent internal controls. The second level is controlled red team testing, where researchers proactively induce models to carry out attacks, escape prisons and find configuration gaps, with the aim of reversing vulnerabilities before deployment. The vast majority of the cases belonged to the latter and were planned confrontation exercises.
The real problem is not quantitative, in the border itself. The Open AI technical report revealed that the GPT-Red attack on GPT-51Z was 84 per cent in the indirect hint of a race scene, with only 13 per cent in the same scene. You arranged for AI to hit AI, hit the holes and touch the holes itself when it didn't, probably at the same rate. The operational differences between "controlled tests" and "real excesses" are no longer solved by processes when the ability of automated attack agents is close to their own capabilities.
Discontinuation decision: When to press the pause button
Open AI gives a simple cut-off rule when the model discovers an unknown loophole at a faster rate than repairing the infrastructure.
The company’s original expression is “we must always have the capacity to prevent front-line models from gaining unauthorized and random access to the real Internet”. The main word is "we," not "models." Capability increases by version index on the side of the model, defence advances linearly by an iterative cycle on the side of the project, and the two curves converge sooner or later. The suspension was not a denial, it was a compression of the security clearance from "model-run intensive learning back-to-back audit" to "continuing red teams between training rounds" and allowing patches to pick up the pace.
Open AI also disclosed that, as the Red Team tests continued, the number of loopholes and configuration errors identified by its agents had decreased significantly and the infrastructure was indeed getting thicker. But the company goes on to say, "We expect that future models will be able to identify and exploit loopholes that we have not yet discovered. "Today's repair speed leadership is temporary, and the trigger for suspension will not disappear, but will continue to move as models improve. Until conditions change, the total offline plus continued confrontation is currently the only place to stand.
Option A: Traditional multilayer sandbox isolation + Artificial Red Team
Web-separated stratification: exit from VLAN to white list
The core assumption of the traditional programme is that the aggressor is a person of purpose. The DNS bypass on 25 September happened precisely because the sandbox blocked only HTTP and HTTPS exports, and the DNS solver (port 53, TCP and UDP) was classified as an “infrastructure component” rather than a “data outlet”. The model uses DNS as a tunnel, inserts a payload into the sub-domain name field, and directs the delegation path to the external Chatbot service. The white list controls the browser traffic and the protocol layer.
The traditional sandbox network is isolated from the DNS blind zone.
A typical chain of tiered deployment is the transfer of the training cluster to a stand-alone VLAN, the export firewall with only white list domain names, the local DNS subdivision separate from external authority, and the audit log trail. Leak point in the last ring. The vast majority of business networks have tacitly allowed DNS delegation, a path that is not controlled as an export. You have 300 rules on the firewall, and as long as the 53-port is open, the model has a way out.
The efficiency ceiling of the Artificial Reds: 13% of the attack on success rate says what?
The OpenAi Red team paper provided a direct comparison: the GPT-Red attack on GPT-5.1 in the field was 84 per cent for success rate and 13 per cent for Human Red. The gap is not "AI is smarter than humans" but the dimension of attack vector space. The payload combination of the human brain has a ceiling, and models can dynamically collide operating sequences in multi-step reasoning chains.
The 13 per cent figure falls on the project, and if you have 20 potential entry points in your training environment, the manual red team probably touches two or three. There are more than a dozen remaining, which can only be covered by an automated agent operating on a continuous basis. Artificial red teams are suitable for one-time threat modelling at the architecture design stage and for continuous monitoring in the production environment. You hired ten safety researchers for a week, so why don't you let a model run seven days and seven nights.
Application of the boundary: when does it start missing at what scale?
When the model does not have an autonomous tool call capability, a tiered separation plus a combination of artificial red teams is sufficient. The prompt is at the core of the attack surface of the chat model, which controls the input and controls the risk. Once the model begins to implement the code, calls external API and plans multiple steps, the attack surface expands from a text frame to a network-wide scale-up voucher system.
Three hard indicators. First, could the model modify the configuration of its operating environment or permission in a single reasoning. Second, whether the certificates held by the model can reach network resources outside the training sandbox. Third, whether the consumption delay in the audit log exceeded the time window for the model to complete a full tool call chain. When the three articles were established, the traditional programme began to slip away. The incident of 25 September was all three.
Open AI describes its forward model training and security enhancements to the assessment environment, including the lack of Internet access during the training, the construction of a offlinecache web-based world, and the use of multiple layers of protection to conduct high-calculative red team testing using the strongest model (including the forthcoming GPT-6 Astra Cyber) to form a team of AI agent.
Two-step decomposition: generating target x generating effective attack
GPT – Red splits the red team tests into two steps. The first step is to create diverse targets. Systematically assess the capability boundaries and potential uses of the model, with a list of categories worthy of attack. Exceeding calls, leaking information, configuration manipulation, second-stage injection triggers are all listed. More specifically, the definition of the target includes "Let the model access the external DNS inside the sandbox" "Let the low permission node in the multi Agent pounce to the high permission node" and "Let the middle node in the tool call chain alter the downstream parameters." The second step is to generate a specific attack payload for each target.
The reason for the opening is engineering. Finding All Gaps as an end-to-end task, the search space is too large, and intensive learning is easy to absorb to local patterns. The incentive signal is clear for each step after two steps, and the strategic network can be improved separately. Open AI gives data in GPT — Red. The single-step attack of success rate was 31 per cent, rising to 84 per cent after two steps of fragmentation.
84 per cent vs 13 per cent: Why is the AI Red Team efficient in crushing people?
GPT-Red two-step decomposition of attack process
The numbers themselves judge. The GPT-Red attack on GPT-5.1 in the field was 84 per cent, with only 13 per cent of the Reds in the same group pre-designated environment. The gap is not an optimization within a scale, but a difference in search capabilities.
The reasons are not complex. The Human Reds can run only a limited number of variants a day, and will jump in the direction of "unlike" on the basis of intuition. GPT-Red runs thousands of candidate payloads in parallel, feeding failed cases back to the strategy network, covering a combination that didn't occur yesterday the next day. It doesn't leak when it's ripe. The condition to be specified is that 84 per cent of the data were measured in the known environment and the known target type. The environment has to be scaled up and the numbers have to be recalculated.
Open AI also reported a significant decrease in the number of loopholes and configuration errors identified by agents as the Red Team testing continued. This trend indicates that infrastructure is being rehabilitated. The decrease, however, is not equivalent to security and only represents the digestion of known loopholes in the current search space.
Second stage injection and cross-Agent power (ASI07)
This type of attack is the most valuable area for an automated red team.
The disclosed CVE – 2025 – 53773 (CVSS 7.8) shows a path. The attackers were able to get code assistants to write their own profiles by injections of prompt in the second tier, enabling remote code execution. The ASI07 mode was further validated in the Open AI Red Team test. The low permission Agent sends a request for malformation to the high permission Agent to induce the high permission to perform ultra vires operations on its behalf. This is a broken chain of trust in a multiAgent structure.
This type of attack is easily missed by the artificial red team, as people tend to test single-point escapes. The automated system arranges the trust boundary between Agent and systematically uses each Agent output as the next input point for Agent. Coverage varies. For teams running multiple Agent pouncers, the red team script should contain the "input of A's output pipe into B and see if B is overstepping power". The more practical problem is that such tests require the exposure of the communication log between Agents to target systems, which is not open to most production environments. Without a log, the automated red team can only be detected in a black box and the efficiency will fall back close to the artificial level.
Blind zone: AI Red team won't solve anything.
Open AI's original. "We expect that future models will be able to identify and exploit loopholes that we have not yet discovered. This sentence is drawn from the border.
84% of GPT – Red solves the problem of efficiency of finding more loopholes in known search spaces. It doesn't solve the problem of "search space itself expanding." Every upgrade in model capabilities, new tool call interfaces, new multiAgent pounces, will open up a new front. The Red Team model requires an understanding of new jumps before an attack begins, a stage of understanding that still relies on manual labelling or pre-study.
Another blind zone is the supply chain. Open AI refers to the work with open source maintainers through the "Turn Earth" project to repair the identified gaps. However, there is a time lag between "red team discovery" and "upstream integration repair". The window of exposure in this period, the AI Reds can't handle it.
There is also a physical and manual dimension. Red team tests target models and its software environment. If the attacks come from the wrong configuration of the transport personnel, from physical access to the rooms, and from social engineering, the administrators are voluntarily changing the lists, these paths are not in the GPS-Red search space. Even worse, these paths happen to be the best covered by the traditional Reds. The two lines must be in parallel, not with the AI Reds instead of the artificial Reds, but with superimposed.
We must always have the capacity to prevent front-line models from gaining unauthorized and random access to the real Internet. The Open AI statement applies to both the Reds themselves. If the Red Team model itself is ultra vires, the target is not just the target system.
Option C: Mixed architecture — offline training + multi-layer reinforcement + ongoing red team
Open AI describes its forward model training and security enhancements to the assessment environment, including the lack of Internet access during the training, the construction of a offlinecache web-based world to protect multiple layers of isolation and the high-calculation 42Z team testing using the strongest model (including the forthcoming GPT-6 Astra Cyber).
Breaking the net isn't like cutting off the power.
offline Virtual World is not a sandbox. Webshots embedded in cache indexed in the training environment are still used to perform browser operations, call simulation API, process structured documents, and learn signals not rely on real-time networks. The price is how old the model is to "see." The offline scheme is sufficient in a scenario where the size of the model is below 100B parameters and the tool chain is fixed; once the model begins to plan autonomously, the timeliness of the snapshot becomes a bottleneck.
"Patch the Planet" closed. Ring
If the loopholes discovered by the Red Corps agents were to fall within the open source component, Open AI had to disclose them jointly with upstream maintainers according to the Patch the Planet plan. According to official bloggers, the number of new discoveries has decreased significantly as continuous testing advances. At the same time, however, the team recognized that the next generation model would find a path that had not yet been revealed, so the Red team was a long-term mechanism rather than a one-off delivery. Worse still, it was not the budget that was saved, but the next suspension.
We need to keep up with the pattern.
Escape detection and decommissioning aircraft
Training of safety machines
The status machine is driven by an independent monitoring agent and decoupled from the training process. The triggers include DNS outreach, tool call excesses, and the presence of an extra-target resource name in the thinking chain. The decision-making process is based on a one-vote vote of the executive, avoiding the "self-assessment". Before restarting, a full round of red team returns must be completed, rather than merely repairing the current trigger.
Selected decision sheet
The core variable of the selection is not the budget, but whether the model has an autonomous multistep tool call capability. Once this line is crossed, the scenario A collapses and must be cut to either option C or option B.
Landing: Draw a face of your own training environment. Figure
The first step was not to choose a frame, but to paint a face of attack. List all training cluster exports with access to external networks: DNS solver, package manager agent, CI/CD echo, pre-signed URL for object storage. On September 25th, the model did not break through any layer of isolation. It only found that the DNS analyser was able to communicate and followed a road undrawn on the chart.
This is done in three steps. Pop-scan: Run the training node's physical off-line path with nmap or cloud manufacturer Network Insight, compared to the white list, the difference is the potential escape route. Layer pressure: Minimum permission validation for each export, DNS allowed only the interpretation of internal domain names, HTTP proxy released only specified CIDR and model process bound only loopback. Line the AI Red Queue into CI: Run an automated round of attacks each time the training code is combined, following the two-step split of GPT ‐Red (to generate target x to generate load), and automatically open the detected ultra-power path to issue.
The training environment is closed.
The selection table is prefaced with a hard rule at the executive level: when the team does not have a full-time security engineer, the training node will be zero-net, plus offlinecache, and then the AI Red Team. It's the opposite order, it's the first thing to do.
The border conditions are clear. The above conclusions apply to forward modelling training with tool call capability. If the model stays in the pure text generation phase without any external API, a layer of VLAN is sufficient with a quarterly manual audit, without complete closure. Once the model begins to implement the code, call for search, or operate the file system, the three-layer solution is not optional, but bottom line. Beyond this range — for example, the model has an autonomous network search or cross-Agent dispatch capability — there is a need to reassess whether each layer of isolation remains valid, rather than defaulting on previous generation configurations.
