Choosing Your First Generative AI Use Cases
To get started with generative AI, first focus on areas that can improve human experiences with information.
Anthropic’s IPO filing offers a glimpse into soaring enterprise AI demand, but price competition and the cost of delivering AI are complicating the path to profitability.

The frontier AI model provider’s stock market debut filing this week offers one of the clearest looks yet at the economics of the generative AI boom. And the picture is complex.
Enterprise demand is soaring. Anthropic generated $16.3 billion in revenue during the first half of 2026, up from $1.2 billion during the same period last year. By the end of September, more than 11,900 customers had generated at least $100,000 in revenue for Anthropic over the previous 12 months, while about 250 had generated $10 million or more.
But rapid growth doesn't necessarily translate into easy profits. Anthropic reported a $693 million operating loss for the first half of the year, underscoring the enormous cost of developing and delivering frontier AI.
Those economics are getting knottier as competition pressures model prices.
OpenAI this week unveiled GPT-6.1 Terra and cut model prices by 50%, the latest sign of intensifying price competition among frontier model providers. At the same time, lower-cost Chinese open-weight models are giving enterprises more options and putting further pressure on U.S. proprietary model providers.
Alphabet’s, which disappointed the market and triggered the Google parent stock's worst single-day loss ever, offered another view of the changing economics. AI is helping fuel growth in Google Cloud, while the company continues to expand AI across its search and advertising businesses.
Taken together, the developments show that the AI market is entering a new stage. Demand is no longer the biggest question. Enterprises are spending heavily, cloud providers are benefiting from AI infrastructure growth and model use continues to climb.
The harder question is how that demand translates into sustainable profits as the cost of building AI remains high and competition continues to drive prices lower.
For AI providers, the economics of delivering AI may ultimately matter as much as the capabilities of the models themselves.
Also, this week in AI news:
Nvidia bets on personal agents in new Meta partnership: The AI chip giant expanded its partnership with the social media company to provide inference infrastructure for Muse, Meta’s personal AI agent.
Microsoft, Google report booming AI revenue as the tech reshapes business:
The tech giants reported strong AI-driven cloud growth, though analysts say the companies still face pressure to demonstrate that AI investments can generate sustained commercial returns.
Tesla begins humanoid production in California: The EV maker has begun producing its Optimus humanoid robots in California, with early deployments expected to focus on dangerous and repetitive industrial tasks.
Oracle Cloud to offer Google TPUs and new AI chips: Oracle is expanding its AI infrastructure options with Google TPUs and other chips while continuing its Nvidia partnership, giving cloud customers more choices for AI workloads.
AI agents gaining autonomy faster than businesses can secure them: Most companies are giving AI agents more authority to make decisions, but fewer than half can track what those agents are doing across enterprise systems.
OpenAI’s reported Google TPU deal tests AI chip economics: The generative AI vendor is reportedly planning to buy Google TPUs, a move that would expand its access to AI compute beyond Nvidia hardware.
