Unite.AI

Protecting Your Brand from AI Distortion Calls for a New Enterprise Discipline
Add Unite.AI to your preferred sources on Google
AI-powered disinformation is a serious threat to brand reputations. Deliberate attacks are only part of the problem. AI systems can also misrepresent a business by relying on outdated information, confusing it with another company or making unsupported claims.
For years, the content marketing industry, Skyword included, put too much emphasis on volume. We helped brands publish more, but too often that content did little to explain what made their business different. AI search makes those gaps harder to ignore.
Buyers increasingly form opinions without visiting a company’s website. SparkToro found that 68% of U.S. Google searches during January through April 2026 ended without a click, although that figure includes more than AI answers. A Skyword consumer survey of 1,000 U.S. adults, fielded by Dynata, found that 46% of full-time employed Americans have made a major purchase or important decision based primarily on AI-generated information. Across respondents, 47% have taken significant action, such as avoiding a purchase, based on AI-generated brand information.
If a buyer’s first impression comes from an inaccurate AI answer, your company may never get the opportunity to correct it.
A crisis communications plan alone is insufficient. Every enterprise needs someone who owns the questions: What are AI systems saying about us, is it accurate, and what are we going to do about it? That responsibility needs leadership, a dedicated budget and coordination across departments.
How Brands Became Harder to Distinguish
The pressure to rank and maintain a publishing cadence made teams very good at covering the same topics as competitors. Too often, they neglected perspectives only their organization could contribute.
Many enterprise brands now offer the same advice under different logos. We at Skyword call this “generic expertise.” It may be accurate, but it gives buyers little reason to choose one company over another.
AI answers can draw on information learned during training and, when retrieval is used, external sources gathered for the response. Publishing a page does not immediately teach a model new facts or guarantee retrieval or citation. Generic content provides little distinctive information to associate with your brand.
But a lack of differentiation and an inaccurate answer are different problems. A brand can be accurately described and fail to stand out. It can also be distinctive and described incorrectly.
An enterprise approach needs both clear positioning and systems for verifying facts, testing answers and correcting errors.
An Enterprise Operating Model for Brand Protection
Cybersecurity offers a useful comparison. Effective defense requires specialist teams, executive oversight, dedicated investment and responsibilities across the business. Protecting a brand from AI distortion calls for similar coordination.
The CMO can lead, with an executive mandate and defined responsibilities across marketing, technology, product, legal, communications and security. The risk belongs on the enterprise risk register, with funding for monitoring, maintaining verified information and responding to incidents.
Gartner projects that 50% of enterprises will invest in disinformation security products or services and TrustOps strategies by 2027. TrustOps brings together people, processes and technologies to address misinformation, harmful associations and deceptive content.
That is a useful starting point. Protecting brand trust requires cross-department coordination and a content infrastructure that makes important claims easier to verify.
At Skyword, we are building a framework to assess how faithfully AI answers reflect a brand’s distinctive expertise. Our working hypothesis is that a stronger body of accurate, original information can help counter some inaccuracies. That relationship needs testing.
Publishing more generic expertise adds little to what buyers or AI systems can learn about your business.
Brands need to identify what buyers cannot find elsewhere: unanswered questions, insights from proprietary data and perspectives grounded in experience. The goal is to make their expertise clear, useful and verifiable.
Building category authority requires:
- Distinctive messaging and a consistent identity across channels
- A clear perspective supported by evidence
- Original research and proprietary data
- Named authors with documented expertise
Keeping that information current gives buyers and AI systems better sources to consult. It cannot guarantee accurate answers or prevent deliberate attacks.
This work requires skills beyond keyword optimization: research design, interviewing internal experts and organizing content so claims, sources and authorship are clear.
Traffic and engagement still matter. Teams also need to test whether AI accurately describes product capabilities, supports claims with reliable sources and recommends the brand for appropriate reasons. Visibility and citation counts alone cannot answer those questions.
Long-term brand protection also requires four operational capabilities:
- Verified source information: Maintain accessible records of important company and product facts, with supporting evidence, named owners and review dates. Clear attribution helps trace a claim; it does not establish that the claim is true.
- Ongoing AI monitoring: Test relevant questions and follow-up conversations across systems. Record prompts, dates, responses and cited sources. These are samples of system behavior, not a record of actual buyer searches.
- Consistent company information: Keep product details, company relationships and policies current across owned and relevant third-party sources. Publishing corrections does not immediately update a model’s training data or guarantee retrieval.
- A defined response process: Set thresholds for escalating issues across marketing, product, legal, communications and security. Track error severity, recurrence and time to investigate and resolve.
For example, if an AI answer attributes a discontinued capability to your software, verify the error with the product team, check its sources and correct outdated documentation. Request third-party corrections where needed, use platform reporting channels where available, then retest. Developers building AI applications should make sources and errors traceable enough to support that investigation.
The CMO can lead this effort, but responsibility must extend across the business. Leadership needs to assign ownership, fund the work and review unresolved risks. Brands cannot control every AI answer. They can take responsibility for their information and build a repeatable process to find and address errors. That is what makes brand protection an enterprise discipline.
