Last week, on the day of the interview, the producer of The Three Stars: The Future talked about the current state of the group. According to the court line process, the final digital distribution copy was being produced and distributed to the national cinema, and no further changes could be made once the copy had been printed out, but on the night before the visit she was still working with the team on shot in the re-production.
According to her, she “will hate to redo the film with the latest model the night before the show”. People in the studio are always making fun of it, and they're turning off their real movies.
This, until the last minute, reverses the re-emergence of daily life, which has accompanied the entire project for almost two years.
As the first time in the country to get a license for the National Film Office, 100 minutes of real access to the hospital, AI overwhelms, with no available industry experience. Zenium
Over the past two years, generating AI technology has been a monthly iterative process, and many video companies have remained in the conceptual or experimental short film phase for a few minutes, while the 27-year-old traditional film company, Bona, has been the first to hand over an AI long film.
Why the first crab eater? How exactly did an AI 100-minute movie come out?
Before the film officially entered the court line, a two-year trip was discussed with the CEO of the Bonaparte Film Industry, the chief producer of The Three Stars: The Future, and the director of the AIGMS Production Centre in Bonna, and the producer of The Three Stars: The Future.
A 27-year-old film company called "self-revolution."
The starting point of The Three Stars: The Past is the great historical and cultural theme of the Three Stars that Bonaign took in the early years.
As a cultural treasure with a 3,000-year-old history, the three-star piles of earth-producing copper are present without any written record, and the world hears many legends.
In the face of such a difficult question to determine, the Jiang De Futeng team was initially thinking about how to do it, because it was not always the creator himself, “If the story that the creators tell does not want to hear, it would be more trouble”.
At the beginning of the generation of AI from 2023 to 2024, Bona decided to start with an AI short show, The Three Stars: A Revelation of the Future, to test the market and see which direction the audience is interested in.
In 2024, when Douyin came online, the entire team was in an extremely flexible state of marginal broadcasting. At the time, the platform had agreed to go online at exactly 7 a.m. each day, but she was still changing at 6.50 p.m. and she was anxious to call for Internet links.
When it was in episode four, they went to Chengdu for a science fiction writer's show. The last three episodes were simply overturned because writers had come up with a lot of new ideas.
The short-time show eventually took over 200 million hits and helped Bonner to figure out the audience's acceptance of the direction of modern archaeology and science fiction.
While the short play came out, Chiang Deok Fu looked around the industry and found an accident:
A lot of video companies are talking about AI coming and hugging AI, and we're actually learning to see what Brothers do.
It took a turn to find out that we were leading, and that many traditional film companies had not been on our path.
We think that since we've become a lead runner, we'll run.
According to Chiang De Fu, more than 120 years of development since the film was born is a history of self-upgrading.
From the early years, 300 or 400 copies of the film will be scrapped, to digital copies that can be shown in endless cycles, significantly reducing operating costs, each of which is helping the industry.
In the face of the fierce AI, he felt that the industry faced two choices: “revolutionary, one by others, and self-revolution”.
I think self-revolution is more proactive. If we stay the same, and we move when AI has a big influence on us, it's passive.
So our initiative today is an attitude that opens up a whole new course and gives the audience an additional option to return to the cinema.
However, the extension of the short series of minutes to 100 minutes of long-line film is entirely two concepts.
The short play can be turned over in less than 12 or 20 minutes, while the theater film is a business that sells tickets to the audience, has to undergo two levels of content and technical review, and has to set aside the launch cycle. Zenium
These times add up to be terrible because different models are competing, and it is possible that five models are issued simultaneously each month.
While awaiting review and scheduling, the new model continues to be publish, and the team can only see stitches to redo shot.
Today's cinemas have become widely accessible to cloud dishes and wireless transmissions, with the technological requirements for being up-to-date, “the future will be faster and easier, and there may be new ways of controlling our content”.
It took two years, from the very initial absence of models, to move the technology to a high rate of development today, and the tristar pile: the future story was referred to as “a complete record of the development era of AI”, “only this film has experienced”.
In the second film, Operation Unplanned Guangdong, Bona, which is already on board, the difficulties encountered in the initial phase have ceased to exist and the methods of operation are completely different.
But the work has begun to produce a chain reaction in the industry.
More than a dozen countries have even approached Bonner, hoping to bring the film to their local audience, because many countries around the world have no precedent, and their counterparts are curious about what it looks like to be a theater movie.
"You can't find the second one in China." "It's more about exploring for all those who want to use AI to tell a long story than just for ourselves."
What's the real cost of an AI movie?
It is an inherent impression that AI creation is often linked to the “low-cost” generation of the “one-key generation”, but in the production of the Tristring: The Future, the Quijiang experience unprecedented difficulty.
Despite 200 million hits to the bottom, the short play experience cannot be taken directly into the film. A three-minute episode of short dramas with fast narratives, fast rhythms, each with a little hook, can be a 90-100-minute view, with a complete film structure.
It is an entirely different concept to extend a few minutes to 100 minutes, while maintaining consistency in actor performances, scenes and overall narratives.
In order to save the technical troubles and reduce the sense of AI in the picture, many of the short videos on the market have chosen to put a real face on the role. The team abandoned this path at the outset, deciding not to take any form in the real physical space by using the traditional method of filming, but rather to die in the form of intellectuals, which directly generated a super-written image of digital human in virtual space.
This is the most difficult, but in the long run it is possible to sink real digital assets for companies.
Once the leading archaeologists in the film, Jiang City, and the leading astronaut woman, West Hills, live through the story, they can continue to risk their lives in Egypt, Maya, the palace, and so on, slowly building their own trajectory in a ministry.
To move virtual images to cinemas, it is also necessary to go through traditional film companies. Zenium
Chiang Defu mentioned that Bonner has had a more nuanced habit for many years: whether it's a hospital movie, a TV show, or a short video that can be seen on a mobile phone, all the samples are shown on screen.
Because we know in particular that there's no problem on the phone, and there's something wrong with getting on the big screen, and you can't imagine it.
Jiang Defu said that many of the AI users normally look on the screen and see no flaw, but once placed on the big screen, the frame falls, the sound is not synchronized, and the small penitents are exposed.
In order to get to the technical limits of AI, the Taki River even learned to read computer codes and try to understand the language of the new tool.
Even so, the fast-tempered model keeps the team in a cycle of repeated overthrows. The new version of LLM is often just finished and publish is not good enough to look back at the previous version of shot and can only be done again immediately.
Jiang De Fu, who used to film it on film and in numbers, used to say that the film was a sad art, “I thought that with AI, the film could become an art that reduces regret, and it turns out there's still regret”.
It is because of two years of almost harsh grinding that both creators felt the need for an explanation when they heard voices from the outside saying, "Do you want to see it for free with the AI key?"
"First, it's not a key generation. We're giving it a serious attitude."
Chiang Defu made two calculations, starting with the cost of production, with a team of 70 or 80 people who spent more than two years in front of the Three Stars: The Future, with a total investment of more than tens of millions of dollars, comparable to the market's many millions of low- and medium-cost hospital films.
As Trigjiang said, AI also follows the "money-for-money" approach, and high-precision images are backed by solid calculations and manpower inputs.
The second is the operating cost of the cinema.
Unlike the use of short video at the near-zero threshold at the end of a mobile phone, viewers walk into cinemas, behind which rentals, screening equipment, personnel services and day-to-day management are all hard expenses and still need to be maintained through ticketing rooms.
However, as the first AI movie to go to the hospital, Bonaign did not make the high-vote house a priority, but instead took the initiative to lower the fare at the end of the issue, thereby encouraging the audience to look at the new thing and make more suggestions for improvement.
According to Chiang De Fu, running through the production and distribution of this millions of-grade AI film is also of value to small and medium-sized companies and growth-oriented companies in the industry.
It used to cost $10 million to make a big picture of reality, and it worked roughly, and the audience didn't buy it; it now combines the same $10 million with AI technology, from visual effects, macros to sound environments.
Some parties say the audience doesn't look. I don't think you should ask the audience why we haven't done the best. If you want the audience back, we'll do the best we can. To give the audience more options.
Runnin' through AI, sucking up the traditional film industry.
When the project was launched two years ago, the first challenge before it was nobody.
In the circumstances, professional filmmakers would never use AI to make a film, “it is a downside to them, not a downside, but several downsides”. It's not possible to find an artificial intelligence technician because they have no film experience at all.
Only a great deal of effort can be devoted to forming a cross-border team, requiring candidates “to cross at least two fronts first”: either fully understand the film and love the technology, or purely skilled but particularly interested in the film. The team also included a number of people from games, fine arts and scriptwriters.
As the production went further, Chiang De Fu found that it was not enough to love movies and understand technology alone, because the rhythm and consistency of each play in a long film could not be determined by liking, and it was necessary to develop the team into a “director-thinking user of AI technology”.
Two years of grinding down because of the lack of such expertise in the industry, the Zaki Xiaojiang team is now becoming a military school in the industry, and new people can find a composite production process even if they stay here for a month, and many of them walk out of here and soon become directors or cadres of other companies.
In addition to in-house training, the two producers are also doing gold-hunting around the web.
On the morning of the visit, Chiang Deok Fu opened his phone and painted an 18-episode short play, reading four or five in a row.
It's not gonna work. In our view, there's a lot of unprofessional. But I'm attracted to this story, and I'm a filmmaker, and I can read four series in a row, which shows that it's quite a narrative.
According to Chiang De Fu, Chinese films lack not only financial resources, but also author and director, and the number of students who graduate from the National Film Institute each year is far from sufficient, and some of the students who come in for an examination do not even have much interest in movies.
Today the public is rubbing their hands on short video, which happens to be a blue sea to make up for the shortage of Chinese film talent.
Because the LLM tool will become simpler, the core criterion for Bonner picking people out of short video is the ability to tell stories, and when he finds out that Squid, the film company gives them professional experience in long film production.
You brought him here to do it together. It's quite a relief. He's done well with short video, short films, and when he's included in the team, he'll take him to make a long film and let him know how it works.
As to whether AI technology will impact on existing filmmakers, Taki Xiaojiang feels that traditional directors need no anxiety at all, because the Ai film and reality film are two tracks. “The more technology is developed, the more people want to see hand-made things, it's a counterproductive mind.”
In fact, even if we're fully committed to AI, Bona's real movie is still there, let alone given up. They spent two years making the first long picture of the AI campus, also for the purpose of finding traditional films. Zenium
As Jiang De Fu said:
The Boone film industry has been developing for 27 years and is young, with greater emphasis on the future. What's the future? Talent-to-technology, better script-writers, better creative subjects, and more technocratic composites to feed our traditional film industry with the ability to master new technologies.
By reducing efficiency gains through AI technology, savings can enable more people to create our stories, create different subjects, and increase the quantity and quality of our products.
In his eyes, from short drama tests to long film completion, the greatest gain was to map the temperament of new technologies. “We know how to use the new technology, and what it can do to support my real film, reality series, in the process.”
Jiang Defu said that, in the future, Bonaign would not make it mandatory to shoot several AIs and a few real people each year, but would do so on the basis of the weight of the subject matter, some pure, some pure AIs and others using a combination of real people and AIs.
So Bonner's gonna have real movies, and it's gonna have an AI movie, but it's more about supporting our traditional industry with AI technology.
On the morning of the visit, Chiaki Xiaojiang turned over WeChat records from his mobile phone and found a message sent to Jiang De Fu on 9 March 2024. She sent a test video the other day and told him, "Our characters can talk."
The man in the video is the leading man of the three stars: the future. Until then, the character was just a static picture, with eyes that didn't turn, blink, and no mouth open, but pushed forward with words.
Until that day, he was finally able to speak, even though his mouth and dialogue line could not do it, and he jumped out one word at a time, but it was this rough piece of testing that turned into a 100-minute hospital film two years later.
That video was left to this day: "It was like seeing a kid talk, and that excitement was real."
